Before you can even begin to understand bull or bear markets you are going to need to know what they are and why they are called what they are. The reason for this is that knowing what something is and why it was named the way it was can give you plenty of insight into how something works, not to mention the fact that it can give you a better understanding of the ins and outs of what you can and can’t do with the product or service. But one thing that you need to know about bull and bear markets is that when people invest in this type of market they will invest like the trend will continue.
So let’s take a look at bull markets first. Bull markets are basically the movements in the stock market in which the prices are rising and most everybody thinks that the prices will continue to rise. During this time inflation is really low, economic production is strong and there are plenty of jobs available for people to choose from. The reason that the bull market got its name is that investors who think and act like the market will start to rise or keep on rising are said to be bullish.
Now let’s take a look at bear markets. Bear markets are actually the exact opposite of bull markets. With bear markets the stock prices are falling and people think that the stock prices are going to continually fall no matter what. During this time inflation is on the rise, the economy is slowing down and unemployment numbers are on the rise. The reason that the bear market got its name is through investors that think or act like the market is going to fall or continue to fall are thought to be bearish.
Now that you understand what a bear and bull market is let’s take a look at what causes bear or bull markets. Basically there are numerous things that cause the market to be either a bear or bull market, but one of the things that is partly responsible is the supply and demand for securities. The other thing that is responsible for bear or bull markets is investor psychology and government involvement that is aimed at changing the economic activity. Basically these two forces combine with each other to cause people to bid higher and higher or lower and lower for the prices of stocks.
But just because people are bidding higher or lower for stocks doesn’t necessarily mean that the market is going to be a bear or bull market. In order for the market to qualify as a bear or bull market the market must have been moving in its current direction for a long period of time. Another thing that you need to know about bull markets is that even though they can last for a period of years they all usually end in recessions or market crashes.
Something else that you should know about bear and bull markets is that they can not be accurately predicted, although there are plenty of theories and complex calculations that investors use to try and predict when the market is going to rise or fall. But the good news is that no matter which type of market is going on, bear or bull market, an investor can actually make some kind of a profit, as long as they know what they are doing. In bull markets the best way to make a profit is to buy the stocks early and sell them when they reach a high value. Basically a bull market is a great market for speculators and risk takers. Where as a bear market the best way to make a profit is to sell your stocks short or start selling them as soon as the market starts to turn downward. But mostly the people who do well in a bear market are those who invest in safer things, such as bonds and money market accounts.
