One of the reasons why employees get sick all the time is due to their weak immune systems. This can happen because they are not living healthy lifestyles but it often arises because they are under a great deal of stress. Stress is a silent killer as it often leads to high blood pressure and a handful of other conditions. As an employer you need to learn how to recognize the signs of stress in the workplace and to start taking care of your employees and to help them learn to manage stress. Employee stress that is left to get worse will cause an office to become disorganized and it will also lead to decreased employee morale. You need to work with your employees to find out what is causing them to experience such high levels of stress and to help them learn how to manage it so they don’t end up with employee burn out where they leave work for a week at a time and still come back with stress and frustration.
Employee burnout it scary because like an illness, it can spread. When one employee starts to hate their job and they resent their boss and co-workers, they bring negative energy with them to the workplace. This negative energy will spread. They often become lazy and miss deadlines because they have no desire or motivation to work. It can cost employers thousands and possibly millions of dollars a year. It will also lead to increased morale and this can be a challenge to get back.
Handling employee stress is not going to be easy for a manager to do. You have employees that really don’t step up to the plate and admit they are under a lot of stress and need help. As a manager you need to be able to recognize the signs of burnout and you have to understand how to lead your other employees through times when there is a decrease in employee morale.
If you have been a manager for several years, you may be able to quickly recognize the signs of employee stress. If you are new to the game, it may end up taking a big conflict with the team for you to see that some of your employees are stretched too thin and they are affected deeply by stress. Learning to read personalities and to know what triggers stress will allow you to quickly fix a situation before it does get out of hand.
To manage employee stress you need to create an environment that is calm and relaxing. Create an office that has positive energy and doesn’t weigh down your employees when they are working. You want to look at things like the color of paint on the walls to the music that is playing in the office. Look for ways to calm your staff and to provide your employees with plenty of escape options so they aren’t overwhelmed.
Sit down and talk to your employees and encourage them to make their desk area their own space. This way they can add things that calm them like a plant or adding a picture of their loved ones to their desk. As they have “escape” items to look at it can help them to feel relaxed and not like they are always dealing with professional work all the time.
When you notice your staff is under pressure, take them to lunch and talk about personal lives instead of work all the time. Get them out of the workplace because it can help them to breath and relax. You might even consider taking a staff meeting outside where they can have fresh air along with the sunlight, which helps to improve moods.
