How to cut back on vehicle costs

Having a car can do wonders for your social life and give you the freedom to go almost anywhere whenever you want but all this convenience comes with a price. The cost of owning a car can sometimes be comparable to the cost of owning a home. With the pressure to constantly be keeping up with the Jones’s, owning a bigger and better car is causing many people to acquire bigger and bigger amounts of debt.If this sounds like you or you are just looking for a way to lower the vehicle costs that you do have, here are a few helpful hints.

Make sure that your tires are inflated
One of the easiest and yet very effective ways of making your car more fuel efficient is to make sure that your tires are properly inflated. On the side of each of your tires is a PSI amount. The PSI tells you how much air your tires can and should hold safely.Use a tire gage to make sure that you are only putting the recommended amount of air into the tires as over inflating them may cause more problems than having them under inflated.

Regular maintenance and oil changes
Although it may be difficult to pay regular amounts for your car’s preventative care, it will save you a lot of money in the long run.It is always easier to prevent a problem by detecting it early than to have to make a repair.Simple fixes like changing the oil and cleaning or replacing the air filter will make your car run more smoothly and can prevent more serious problems from occurring.

Be a safe driver
Car insurance is often times forgotten as a cost associated with owning a car.Car insurance, however, can in some cases cost more per month than your monthly car payment!Anything that you can do to reduce the cost to insure your car or cars is helpful.Car insurance companies give premium discounts to those with safe driving records. Some insurance companies will even reduce the deductible when you have had a certain amount of time elapse without being in an accident. If you have teenagers on your car insurance policy, many agencies will give you a good student discount if your teen is doing well in school.Check with your local insurance agent and ask about ways that you can save.

Roll down the windows
The air conditioner can use up the fuel in your car faster than any other factor (other than running the car itself, or course). This is not to say that you should cause yourself to suffer from heat exhaustion because you need to save money by not using the air conditioner, but rather simply be aware of when you can roll down the window or simply blow air into the car instead.Being aware of when you can do without the air conditioner can save you money as you will not need to fill the tank as often.

Scale down
Big cars need more gas and more gas means spending more money.SUV’s are convenient but at a price. If you can, scale down until you absolutely need the extra room. When you are in the market to buy a new car, pay close attention to the MPG or miles per gallon it gets.

Car pool
A good way to save on vehicle costs is to take turns in a car pool.If you can ride with co-workers or friends you can save a lot on gas and on the wear and tear on your own car.Plus it’s nice to have the company, right?!

Look for deals on gasoline
With prices on gas constantly going up, any break on the cost is welcomed. Many warehouse stores such as Costco or Sam’s Club offer discounted gas prices to their club members. Also, different credit card companies offer rewards points for money spent on gas.
