Heart Disease Symptoms: shortness of breath

When to See the Doctor
Just because a person is experiencing shortness of breath doesn’t mean he or she is having a heart attack, or even that the person has heart disease. Shortness of breath is caused by many factors, including asthma, exercise or exertion, smoking and the effects of nicotine, and some medications.

However, in some cases shortness of breath can signify heart disease or another serious problem. Get to the doctor if your shortness of breath has any of the following symptoms:

If it occurs if you are resting quietly or sitting or after very mild exercise, such as walking at a comfortable pace. If you can’t breathe unless you’re being propped up or sitting, it is cause for concern and requires medical attention.
It gets worse. If shortness of breath suddenly gets worse or changes in state, then you should see the doctor.
It is accompanied by other symptoms. Shortness of breath that occurs along with chest pain, nausea, or pains in the arms or jaw could indicate a heart attack, and the person should immediately seek medical attention.
It happens suddenly. Suddenly feeling short of breath for no reason at all is a sign of a serious problem, and it is important to call 911 or go to the emergency room immediately.

How is Shortness of Breath Treated?
Shortness of breath is treated in a variety of ways, depending on the cause. In some cases, it is caused by smoking, in which case the doctor will advise you to quit.
When shortness of breath is the result of heart disease, the doctor may put you on medication in order to narrow the arteries and increase the flow of blood to the heart and other muscles. In addition to medication, he may also recommend the following changes:
Diet. A diet high in fat and cholesterol leads to the clogging and narrowing of the arteries.
Weight loss. Being overweight or obese contributes to heart disease, as the increased strain makes the heart work harder.
Exercise. Exercise can improve blood flow and lower high blood pressure, another cause for heart disease.

Shortness of breath, particularly when it is sudden or unpredictable, could be a symptom of heart disease and should be treated seriously.
