Gout is a type of arthritis in which there is too much uric acid in the body. This uric acid crystalizes in the joints and cause arthritis. The gout diet is a diet that gets rid of or reduces the intake of foods that have a high amount of purines. The purines are what the uric acid comes from.
There are many foods that can be eliminated or reduced from your diet in order to avoid their high purines which may eventually end up causing gout.
This diet does not cause any major changes in diet, just a list of foods to avoid to that you can protect yourself. Maybe you should not avoid them so much though as you should just eat them in moderation.
Eat mostly healthy, fresh foods and then moderate how much you eat of the other. There really are not a lot of foods on the list though and the ones that are there are not super common. Even if some of them are though, they cannot hurt you that bad if you are not eating them in excess.
If you are balancing and eating the more important things more than anything else, then you should be fine.
For health this diet should receive a six. Yes it will help you, but it is really not an essential or critical diet. It is just a heads up to the foods that might cause you to get gout someday if you eat them in excess and not moderation.
For ease of implementation this diet should receive a ten. None of the foods on the list are really in a common diet. Sure some of them are used now and then such as bacon, turkey and salmon, but they are not used often enough to cause you to get gout. And those are the three most common ones.
Probably if you were eating them every day, you would have a problem. If you were then you wouldn’t have to eliminate them you would just have to slow down and moderate them and you would be fine.
For the same reasons, this diet should receive a ten for ease of adherence. Since you do not usually have the foods anyway, then it wouldn’t be very hard to keep not usually having them.
For long term potential this diet should receive a ten. In the long term you would be able to avoid having gout. That is a pretty good effect. The people who have arthritis have a very hard time with it because their joints hurt so badly. It would be great to be able to avoid that just by moderating your intake of a few foods.
For family friendly this deserves a nine. It wouldn’t be too difficult to implement into your family but it means you cannot have bacon every day for breakfast and you cannot have a turkey sandwich every day for lunch. Most people probably do not. But if they did, they would have to go through a few changes in their family meal plans.
For the busy lifestyle this diet deserves at ten. Even if you are busy it is not hard to avoid these foods. It is actually very easy. Say you need to order a hamburger for lunch, well just do not order a bacon burger and it is all good. It would be really easy to follow. It doesn’t even take time to think about it.
This diet is not critical. It is more informational than it is critical. It is kind of like “just so you know.” So don’t worry about more than is necessary.
